GREETINGS FROM THE CAW!

CAW Update

In early October, the CAW participated in the 2nd International Gender Conference, sponsored by the Gender Development Institute (GDI) in Ghana.  The CAW facilitated two workshops, one focusing on the organizational self-assessment tool, The Gender Audit, and the second on a new joint publication with the GDI, Stories of Equitable Development: Innovative Practices From Africa.  An article on this conference will be featured in the November 19 issue of Monday Developments.

In late October, the CAW held a luncheon on “The Challenges of Diversity on Boards: Lessons Learned from the Corporate Community” as a part of its Gender Equity on Boards of Directors Campaign.  Forty-four InterAction members support the Campaign, and those attending the event took home valuable insights and practical approaches for increasing women’s representation on their own boards.  Dr. Mary Mattis, Senior Associate at Catalyst, presented research on trends and barriers related to women’s representation as well as recommendations for effective board placement strategies based on her organization’s forty years of experience. Catalyst, a “non-adversarial advocacy organization,” works to advance women in business leadership with a particular focus on placing women on the boards of Fortune 500 companies.  See the November 19 issue of Monday Developments for more information on this event.

The CAW also held two successful book events in early November. The first launch/reception, co-sponsored with Winrock International, featured a newly published training manual Chrysalis: Leadership Training for Pioneering Women.  Authors Maggie Range and Phoebe Omandi facilitated a useful session that highlighted their innovative training approach for empowering women leaders and building gender-sensitive organizations.  Copies of the Chrysalis manual are available through Women Ink (www.womenink.org).

The second brown-bag discussion featured Unbending Gender: Why Family and Work Conflict and What to Do About It. Author Joan Williams, from both a moral/ethical and business standpoint, proposed why an inclusive, family-friendly workplace, supports both women and men as caregivers and workers.  Most of all, Williams argued how children would benefit most from this new vision of the workplace.  Copies of this book are available through Oxford University Press (www.oup-usa.org).

Upcoming CAW Workshop on Gender Equity on Practical Strategies for Recruiting Women Board Members
December 5, Washington, DC.  The CAW invites you to attend a workshop on “Practical Strategies for Identifying and Recruiting Top-Notch Women for Your Board of Directors,” by Jennifer Rutledge.  The workshop will be held on December 5, Wednesday, 12:00 – 5:00 p.m., at InterAction (1717 Massachusetts Ave. NW, Suite 701, Washington DC).

This workshop, designed for InterAction members who are part of the Campaign for Gender Equity on Boards of Directors, will get at the nuts and bolts of recruiting women (including women of color and with disabilities) for agency boards. Jennifer Rutledge, noted author of Building Board Diversity, will serve as workshop presenter and facilitator.  Members can expect to learn practical strategies that can be applied in their organizations.  Preferential registration for participating organizations in the Campaign.  Workshop cost, includes lunch: $10.  Space is limited, so register early!

RSVP by November 26 to Julie Montgomery at jmontgom@interaction.org.  This event is a part of the Campaign for Gender Equity on Boards of Directors.  For information on how your organization can join this important Campaign, please contact the CAW at 202.667.8227.

InterAction Seeking Nominations for Annual Humanitarian Award
