American Jewish World Service (AJWS)
Statement of Purpose American Jewish World Service (AJWS) is an international development organization dedicated to alleviating poverty, hunger and disease among the people of the developing world regardless of race, religion or nationality. Motivated by Judaism’s imperative to pursue economic and social justice, AJWS helps people in Africa, Asia and the Americas realize their basic human rights by empowering grassroots non-governmental organizations. Through grant making, volunteer service, advocacy and education, AJWS works to build civil society, foster sustainable development and promote human dignity for all people.
Programs & Activities
Grants
AJWS’ grant making supports community-based organizations in the developing world that are undertaking holistic community development programs. These groups design and implement projects that creatively and effectively address economic development, education, healthcare and sustainable agriculture.
All of the initiatives also have strong components of strengthening civil society and/or promoting women's empowerment. Fundamentally, our grant making links human rights and sustainable development.
Service
The AJWS Volunteer Corps places Jewish professionals with grassroots organizations in Africa, the Americas and Asia to provide skills training to non-governmental organizations.
AJWS Service Delegations participants to learn more about grassroots sustainable development and focus on the connections between social justice, service and Judaism.
AJWS Volunteer Summer and AJWS Alternative Breaks give high school and college students the opportunity volunteer for seven weeks with an AJWS partner organization in a rural area in the developing world.
Advocacy
AJWS organizes grassroots campaigns in the United States in order to support our partners by enhancing human rights, economic development, and women’s empowerment. AJWS organizes grassroots campaigns demanding an end to genocide in Darfur, promoting global debt relief, and advocating for greater funding to fight the AIDS pandemic. |
