Heifer International
Statement of Purpose Heifer International, working in partnership with others, alleviates hunger, poverty and environmental degradation by helping families to become self-reliant for food and income. Heifer development work provides animals, training and technical assistance to low-income families in 48 countries and 15 states. Heifer provides more than 25 different kinds of food and income-producing animals, as well as intensive training in animal husbandry, community development and environmentally sound, sustainable agricultural methods.  
Programs & Activities
Agriculture and Food Production
Heiferhelps small farmers produce more protein and increase income by providing them with quality livestock and related support; provides training programs emphasizing good health, nutrition and management practices; and develops livestock breeding programs.
Community Development
Heifer works with community organizations as they initiate and manage projects and determine self-defined goals. It also teaches skills in community leadership.
Development Education
Heifer staff run learning and livestock centers; lead workshops; speak and publish materials to educate the US public about the causes and solutions to hunger and poverty, and about sustainable agriculture programs.
Environment and Natural Resource Management
Heifer trains farmers in ecologically sound farming technologies such as zero-grazing, alley cropping, soil restoration and conservation, and tree and grass planting.
Nutrition
Heifer provides families with improved nutrition from milk, eggs and meat, as well as extra income for food.
Women in Development
Heifer provides services to rural women through projects and workshops. It publishes the Women in Livestock Development (WILD) newsletter, a forum for women farmers and trainers to share technologies and experiences. Heifer works in cooperation with existing agencies, mission and church groups, Peace Corps volunteers, cooperatives, 4-H clubs, UN agencies and local governmental and private organizations. |
