International Reading Association
Statement of Purpose The International Reading Association seeks to promote high levels of literacy for all by improving the reading process and teaching techniques; serving as a clearinghouse for the dissemination of reading research through conferences, journals, and other publications; and actively encouraging the lifetime reading habit.
Programs & Activities
Communications and Research
The Association networks practitioners and reading researchers through meetings, special seminars and institutes, journal articles and books. A small grants program and a prestigious awards program recognize and promote effective reading research; other awards recognize teaching, media coverage of reading, and children’s book writing.
Education
More than 2,250 councils and national affiliates in 99 countries hold regular conferences and promote the goals of the 90,000-member association at the local, provincial, and national level. More than 70 volunteer committees explore such subjects as adult literacy, communicating with the public about reading, and early childhood literacy development. International Reading Association publishes four professional journals for educators and reading researchers, as well as books and pamphlets for parents. |
