U.S. Fund for UNICEF
Statement of Purpose The U.S. Fund for UNICEF works for the survival, protection and development of children worldwide through education, advocacy and fundraising. Created in 1947, it is the oldest of 37 national committees around the world that support UNICEF's mission. UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund, provides health care, clean water, improved nutrition, and education to millions of children in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.
Programs & Activities
Health and Nutrition
The US Fund supports UNICEF projects providing primary health care services, such as immunizations and health education, as well as ensuring that children receive nutritional supplements, including vitamins and therapeutic food for severely malnourished children. Additionally, UNICEF is helping to address the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS on children and their communities. This includes health care for those infected and other support for children living with HIV positive parents.
Clean Water and Sanitation
The US Fund supports UNICEF projects that provide long-term solutions to water and sanitation issues in developing countries. This includes assistance in the construction of water and sanitation facilities, as well as training for communities to maintain and use the facilities properly and for the benefit of children's health and survival.
Education
The US Fund supports UNICEF education projects that not only recognize the right of all children to a quality education, but also provides children with education that is relevant to their community and culture. Special emphasis is placed on girls’ education and education for children at risk of exploitation or who have been left alone due to HIV/AIDS, natural disasters or conflict.
Special Protection
UNICEF was born out of the emergency of World War II, which left millions of children in Europe and Asia in need of help. Today, while UNICEF's focus has been broadened to provide long-term development assistance for the benefit of the world's children, UNICEF continues to be a leader in providing emergency assistance in times of natural disaster or conflict. |
