World Vision (United States) (WVUS)
Statement of Purpose World Vision is a Christian relief and development organization dedicated to helping children and their communities worldwide reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty.
Programs & Activities
Agriculture and Food Production
World Vision’s goal is to increase food security in food deficit regions through agriculture, reforestation, and soil and water conservation programs which utilize cash and commodity inputs. Ensuring a safe water supply forms a foundation for almost every World Vision project. Besides drilling wells and installing pumps, World Vision trains communities in system maintenance, hygiene, sanitation and in the use of water in vegetable production, aquaculture and agriculture.
Child Sponsorship
Child sponsorship promotes positive and lasting change by using sound community development principles with programs in nutrition, education, health care, agriculture, and vocational and skills training for children, parents and their communities.
Disaster and Emergency Relief
World Vision provides timely and effective response to the consequences of short and long-term natural disasters or civil conflict and emphasizes assistance to lay the groundwork for rehabilitation and sustained development.
Domestic Programs
World Vision focuses on needs within the United States, working with churches, volunteers, and community organizations to provide help for homeless families and affordable housing, jobs and job training, small-business development, volunteer mentoring and tutoring, leadership development, donated gifts-in-kind, disaster response, and programs for children and at-risk youth.
Education, Public Awareness and Advocacy
World Vision promotes awareness and understanding of global issues through various communications, including television, magazines, and educational materials. Education and public awareness also supports World Vision’s role as an advocate for the world’s poor and vulnerable. World Vision seeks to educate its own staff, its constituency and the American public about the process of development.
Enterprise Development and Credit Loans
Revolving loans, economic development training, supplementing food crops with cash crops and organizing community-level business cooperatives are some of the ways in which World Vision works to create sustainable development through indigenous economic empowerment.
Food Assistance
World Vision believes that food is an important resource in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. Although food self-sufficiency is a goal for every nation and region, it is recognized that for some nations and regions, achieving this goal will require many years of intensive effort. Therefore, World Vision seeks short-term and long-term solutions to the problems of food deficits in developing countries, through the use of appropriately programmed food aid.
Gifts in Kind
Gifts-in-kind from the US government and from US corporations provide food commodities, material goods and crucial resources for relief and development programs.
Natural Resource Management
World Vision’s emphasis on sustainable development necessitates an on-going commitment to natural resource management as a foundation of all development projects. Efforts include soil and water conservation, livestock management, reforestation, and training in environmentally sensitive land and water management.
Public Health, Nutrition and Child Survival
Health projects often form the basis of a development-oriented program. World Vision’s international health program provides resources and technical support in areas such as health training, AIDS prevention and education, nutrition and Vitamin A programming, and endemic disease control. Mother and child survival programs are a special focus of World Vision’s work. |
