We’ll Meet You On-Line…
Looking for a way to tap the minds of colleagues in member agencies without travelling to a meeting? Start by subscribing to InterAction’s new interactive electronic forum. To provide better service and promote peer-learning, the Commission on the Advancement of Women (CAW) launched the forum, GenderInteract, in early July. GenderInterAct serves as a link between InterAction members, as well as southern partners, to facilitate interchange on successes and challenges as they attempt to integrate gender into programs and policies.
Despite the vacation season, GenderInterAct generated a good response during July and August. Of the members who have subscribed, about half are located outside of the Washington, D.C. area and several requests have come from the field, suggesting that GenderInteract may prove to be a successful tool for connecting the voices from “outside of the beltway.” Topics of discussion have thus far included gender integration in disaster assistance and organizational change issues.
Designed with the assistance of Volunteers in Technical Assistance (VITA), the listserv-hypermail system allows any member or southern partner with e-mail access to participate, eliminating the questions of access which arise with a fully web-based system. GenderInteract also allows access to previous discussions and messages through an archive which is housed on the InterAction web site. To search the archives, a subscriber can organize the messages by topic, author or chronology. While facilitating peer learning among members is the main objective of GenderInteract, the forum will also serve as a resource for the CAW’s “best practices” publications.
During the upcoming months, GenderInteract will provide a unique opportunity for members to ask questions or raise topics and have them addressed on-line by an outside expert. Discussion in this manner will begin with the CAW’s recent publication, Weaving Gender in Disaster and Refugee Assistance (see Publications). As members consider issues in the document, they can discuss the content with outside experts who were involved in its creation. Since a limited number of copies remain, members are encouraged to download the document from InterAction’s web site: .
Subscribe today to be part of a dialogue with other InterAction member organizations and southern partners who are facing similar challenges. While the CAW will continue to generate topics for discussion, members’ questions and topics are responsible for shaping the content of GenderInteract. A presentation on GenderInteract’s progress, including the distribution of a user’s manual, will take place at the CAW’s Sept 24th meeting (see Events). Contact (202) 667-8227x136 or by e-mail at for more information about how you can become involved in GenderInteract.
