Since 1994, all existing and prospective InterAction member organizations have had to certify compliance with the InterAction's Private Voluntary Organization (PVO) Standards. Building on this tradition, all members now undertake a rigorous self-certification, every other year, using various documented 'evidence of compliance', to re-certify their compliance with the Standards.
Intended to ensure and strengthen public confidence in the integrity, quality, and effectiveness of member organizations and their programs, the Standards were created when the overseas work of US NGOs was dramatically increasing in scope and significance. Defining the financial, operational, programmatic, and ethical code of conduct for InterAction and its member agencies, these high and objective standards, set InterAction members apart from many other charitable organizations.
The current Self-Certification Plus process of validation member organization compliance with the Standards encourages organizational learning, advances best practices, and helps ensure that InterAction members meet the highest standards of the international non-profit community. The Standards further public trust and confidence in InterAction members. Indeed, in various aspects, the InterAction PVO Standards exceed the prevailing standards of the Better Business Bureau and the National Charities Information Bureau. Structure The PVO Standards
Committee works with member organizations in promoting standards for PVOs
in the areas of governance, finance, communications with the U.S. public,
management practice, human resources, program and public policy. Compliance
with the PVO Standards is a requirement for admission to InterAction.
The Committee works within the InterAction network and disseminates our
standards setting experience to other coalitions and audiences around the
world. The Nominating Committee recommends to the Executive Committee
candidates for membership on the PVO Standards Committee.
