Malaria

Description

USAID leads the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), which is co-implemented with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). USAID funding supports malaria prevention and treatment activities in 27 countries throughout Africa and Southeast Asia.

Use of Funds

Funds help develop malaria vaccines, antimalarial drugs, diagnostics, and malaria-related research. Funds support the purchase and delivery of insecticides, insecticide-treated bed nets, and insecticide-spraying in homes.

Justification

• Malaria puts nearly half of the world’s population at risk.
• The most recent World Malaria Report reported 241 million cases of malaria in 2020, an increase of 14 million from 2019.
• The fight against malaria is one of humanity’s biggest public health successes. Over the last two decades, 7 billion cases have been averted and 10.6 million lives have been saved.
• A child dies of malaria every two minutes. This translates to nearly 750 preventable child deaths under five each day.
