Democracy, Rights, and Governance
InterAction’s Democracy, Rights, and Governance (DRG) Initiative, established in 2016, assists leading democracy-promotion organizations that support human rights defenders; good governance and transparency; independent, evidence-based media; and political and civic activists across the globe. Why? Because stronger democracies overseas help protect and advance U.S. security and economic interests.
History has shown that democratic countries are less prone to war and foreign aggression, provide more open access to their markets for U.S. businesses, combat international terrorism and crime, and ensure more equitable human rights for all. By working together, our partner organizations successfully advocate for continued support from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), National Endowment for Democracy (NED), and State Department.
The DRG Initiative facilitates information-sharing, coordinated messaging, and outreach support to Congress and the Administration for Members of the coalition, making their voices louder and more effective. Since its inception, the Initiative has obtained increased funding from Congress and garnered a higher profile within the executive branch for its participants.
By investing in democracy strengthening programs, the U.S. helps enable a more peaceful, safe, and prosperous world for the American taxpayer.
