Renewable Energy

Description

Clean or renewable energy programs support cleaner air and increased energy access and security in developing countries. These programs mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Use of Funds

Funds support the infrastructure needed to reduce carbon emissions by installing clean energy systems—including wind and solar—and creating transmission capacity to integrate the sources into energy grids. Funds also support cookstove programs and other in-home technologies that reduce carbon emissions.

Justification

• Energy systems represent 76% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Within the energy sector, the largest amount of GHG emissions (32%) is related to electricity and heat generation.
• Currently, only 38% of total energy production comes from clean energy sources. To achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, the supply of clean energy needs to grow by 13% from 2022-2030. Annual clean energy investment worldwide must triple by 2030 to around $4 trillion.
• For the first time in 20 years, the number of people without access to electricity was projected to increase to 775 million. Clean energy programs are critical for reaching these populations and mitigating the amount of future GHG emissions.
• Since the launch of Power Africa in 2013, 40 countries received Power Africa assistance and more than 165 million people in sub-Saharan Africa have access to electricity for the first time.
