Description

The Global Food Security Strategy, also known as Feed the Future (FTF), draws on 11 federal departments’ and agencies’ expertise to address the root causes of hunger and poverty in countries facing high rates of hunger and malnutrition. It supports country-driven approaches improving global food security and nutrition while building communities’ resilience to shocks.

Use of Funds

Funds support agricultural development, nutrition, and resilience programs; research; and technical assistance in 20 target countries—including research and development at U.S. universities and international institutions of higher education.

Justification

Around 3 billion people in the world were moderately or severely food insecure in 2021, or nearly 30 percent of the global population.
Since 2011, Feed the Future has:
- Helped farmers and farms generate more than $17.9 billion in agricultural sales.
- Unlocked more than $4.8 billion in agricultural financing.
- Leveraged more than $2.6 billion in private sector investment for food security and nutrition.
In response to the current global food security crisis FTF is driving global efforts to:
- Mitigate the global fertilizer shortage.
- Increase investments to support the resilience of smallholder farmers, including women, through access to improved agricultural technologies and inputs, financing, and markets.
- Cushion the macroeconomic shock and impact on poor people.
