The International Organizations and Programs account (IO&P) support voluntary U.S. contributions to international organizations and specialized agencies across various development, humanitarian, and scientific activities.

Use of Funds

IO&P funds contribute to the international organizations below and many others.

Justification

Examples of the organizations and programs funded by IO&P:

• Montreal Protocol Multilateral Fund provides technical and financial assistance to help low- and middle-income countries phase out ozone-depleting substances.
• The U.N. Children’s Fund (UNICEF) works to ensure children’s survival and well-being and is the world’s largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, reaching nearly half the world’s children under age five with 2.3 billion vaccine doses.
• The U.N. Development Program (UNDP) eradicates poverty and reduces inequalities and exclusion. From 2018 to 2021 UNDP assisted 71 million people in 36 countries in obtaining essential services such as water, housing, and health care.
• The U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change advances the assessment of climate change science and technology and ensures cooperation among countries on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
• The U.N. Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) coordinates international responses to humanitarian crises. In 2021, OCHA mobilized $20.1 billion through U.N. coordinated appeals, an increase of 6.4% above 2020, enabling the U.N. and partners to reach 107 million people.
• The U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) provides voluntary family planning information and services; training and deployment of skilled birth attendants and midwives; and works to end child marriage and female genital mutilation. In 2021, 12.7 million unintended pregnancies were averted and 1.5 million safe deliveries assisted in humanitarian settings.
