Prevention and Stabilization Fund

Description

The Prevention and Stabilization Fund (PSF) aims to avert violence, stabilize conflict-affected areas, and address the root causes of global fragility.

Use of Funds

Funding supports context specific efforts to strengthen social cohesion, combat corruption, protect human rights, promote conflict reduction and reconciliation, engage private-sector actors in peacebuilding, and reinforce critical governance reforms, as well as enable international coordination and monitoring evaluation and learning.

Justification

• The PSF supports the implementation of the Global Fragility Strategy, where the U.S. outlines a multi-pronged, multisectoral approach to strengthen the resilience of partner nations and civil society to address fragility challenges in countries at risk of or experiencing instability.
• PSF funding seeks to anticipate and prevent conflict and support inclusive, locally driven political processes to help stabilize conflict affected areas. Currently, PSF funding supports Haiti, Mozambique, Libya, and Central West Africa.
• The Institute for Economics and Peace’s Global Peace Index 2022 reports that the average level of global peacefulness dropped by 0.03%, with 71 countries deteriorating, the 11th deterioration in peacefulness in the last 14 years.
• Conflict and violence costs the world an estimated $14 trillion a year—the equivalent of five dollars a day for every person on the planet.
