InterAction Calls for Unhindered Access for Humanitarian Actors in Syria
WASHINGTON, D.C. – InterAction, the leading alliance of international non-governmental organizations and partners in the United States, released the following statement on December 10, 2024, following the collapse of the Assad regime.
“InterAction stands in solidarity with the people of Syria and emphasizes the critical importance of centering Syrian voices and civil society during this pivotal period of transition.
“The humanitarian needs across the country are immense, with nearly one million Syrians internally displaced since November 28 alone, and millions more enduring the devastating consequences of disrupted services and damaged infrastructure. Local Syrian organizations and civil society have been instrumental in providing life-saving assistance throughout the crisis, and their leadership must be supported and amplified.
“InterAction is committed to supporting its Members who are responding in Syria. Many of them, together with their partners, have been on the ground throughout the conflict, delivering life-saving assistance across the country. It is essential that humanitarian aid reaches all those in need, wherever they are, without obstruction or discrimination. All parties must ensure safe and unhindered access for humanitarian actors and prioritize the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure.
“As some Syrians abroad consider returning, enhanced support is required to empower local organizations, InterAction’s Members, and other humanitarian actors to scale up operations, addressing the needs of current residents and returnees alike. The United States and the international community must back these efforts while guaranteeing that all returns are voluntary, safe, and conducted with dignity, in full respect of the rights and agency of the Syrian people.”
