InterAction Statement on Recent Actions Impacting USAID
WASHINGTON, D.C. – InterAction, the leading alliance of international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and partners in the United States, issued the following statement in response to recent actions impacting USAID.
“InterAction is deeply concerned by recent developments at USAID—programs halted, staff removed from offices, and efforts to integrate the independent agency into the State Department.
“Foreign aid saves millions of lives. This investment pays dividends by preventing humanitarian crises, containing disease outbreaks, and countering adversarial influence in vulnerable regions. That’s why foreign aid has maintained decades of support across party lines—it is vital for U.S. security and international stability.
“The abrupt pause in foreign aid has already forced critical foreign assistance programs to shut down, putting both lives and U.S. security at risk. Aid workers face increasing danger in the field, while America’s credibility suffers lasting damage. This hasty disruption of long-established assistance programs creates dangerous power vacuums that adversaries are eager to fill.
“The foreign assistance pause must be lifted immediately while a methodical, legal review process is conducted and required notifications and consultations with Congress are undertaken. If not, essential humanitarian and diplomatic capabilities will be lost.”
