Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability
The most recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) found that mean global temperatures have reached 1.1 degrees Celsius (2 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels, producing unprecedented changes to the Earth’s climate. Though these shifting climatic patterns and extreme weather events harm us all, we continue to see that they affect poor and marginalized communities worse, undoing years of development gains and fueling complex humanitarian crises around the globe.
The international NGO community has a critically important role to play by advocating for climate-aware policies. With the help of its Member organizations, InterAction is leading the charge—advancing international climate action relies on collective advocacy.
In 2020, nearly 100 organizations committed to using their voice and resources to drive change through the original NGO Climate Compact. InterAction knew the urgency of this work then, but in the three years that have passed since its launch, the increased frequency and severity of climate-induced disasters, as well as their compounding impacts on other global crises, has only heightened the importance of concerted climate action.
InterAction launched the second iteration of the Climate Compact in April 2023 to renew the initial commitments and provide additional guidance around more concrete and robust organizational actions to address climate change.
